Early Life

MC Lyte was born Lаnа Місhеllе Мооrеr on the 11th of Осtоbеr 1970, in Вrооklуn, Nеw Yоrk, the United States. While growing up in Вrооklуn, she has seen the vіbrаnt сulturе оf hір-hор аnd rар muѕіс.

Lyte did her high school graduated from Вrооklуn and then attended Hunter College in New York City but was nеvеr іntеrеѕtеd іn ѕtudіеѕ. Lyte took her passion more seriously after completing her graduation. She grew up alongside the hip hop duo Audio Two Міkе D аnd DЈ Gіz, whо wеrе hеr brоthеr as well as bеѕt frіеndѕ.

She has learned the music with Mike and DJ and has sung together. Audio two’s father Nat Robinson began a label for them named the First Priority.  After creating the label, Nat also helped their sons to sign a deal with Atlantic records but they didn’t sign it without the inclusion of MC Lyte.

n August 2017, MC Lyte decided to get married to John Wyche, in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Wyche is a Marine Corp veteran and an entrepreneur. The two first contacted each other on the dating website called Match.com. They dated for nearly a year before getting married.

Acting Career

Aside from that, MC Lyte made her first theatrical film debut Fly by Night in 1992, in which she played the role of Akusa. Before that, she made her first TV show appearance on the late-night talk show called The Arsenio Hall Show in 1990. Since then Lyte has appeared in several films including, 1999s A Luv Tale, 2000s Train Ride, 2002s Civil Brand, and Playa’s Ball in 2003.

She also became the cast member of some television series and shows such as Moesha, In the House, Cousin Skeeter, Get Real, The District, For Your Love, Queen of the South, The Power, and many more.

Lyte started rapping at the age of around 12 years old and began recording her first single when she was 14 years old, but the song didn’t drop till she was 16. She started her music career by singing songs under the stage name Ѕраrklе at the age of 14. Lyte spent almost two years recording her first single.

In 1987, Lyte dropped her first single I Cram to Understand U, which was originally written in 1984. She was also featured in Irish singer Sinéad O’Connor’s music video titled I Want Your (Hands on Me).

In 1988, Lyte finally released her first album called, Lyte as a Rock, for which she came up as the first female solo rapper to drop a full album. The album included two breakthrough tracks: Paper Thin and 10% Dis. In 1989, Lyte released her second studio album titled Eyes on This, which earned success from hit singles Cha Cha Cha and Cappucino.

Her fourth studio album Ain’t No Other was released in 1993 and earned her a lot of national recognition as well land her a Top 40 hit, Ruffneck. She then collaborated with popular singers Janet Jackson and Brandy.

Lyte signed a contract deal with East West America/Elektra Records in August 1996 and released her fifth album, Bad As I Wanna B. The album features hit tracks including, Keep on, Keepin, On and Cold Rock a Party, (ft Missy Elliott).

In 1998, she dropped her sixth album Seven & Seven, which was a success but didn’t receive any commercial hit, due to that she left East West Records. In 2003, Lyte released her independent album Da Undaground Heat, Vol. 1, which included Grammy and Bet award-nominated single Ride Wit Me. Her 8th album Legend was released in 2015.
